Butchering, Downton Abbey and More Beading

I admit, when Downton Abbey started a few years ago, I couldn’t see the hype. I’d read Catherine Cookson and knew all about the guilt and heartache of people at the turn of the century. Now my view has changed – if not for the drama, then for the fashion. My last couple of creations are 1920’s inspired. My first two are as a result of what I like to call ‘butchering’. This is chopping up something and either putting it back together in a different way or adding to it. I used to do it a lot when I was younger with jeans and what not. Here is what you can do with an old bag and 2 scarves!

1. The bag:

I took all of the straps off the bag.

I pleated a scarf and sneakily sewed it onto the bag:

I’m going to make a long black strap and there you go!

2. The kimono top

I had this large silk scarf from H&M for years and never used it. It’s dead easy to turn it into a kimono. I folded it into four and made a slit for my head:

Then I pinned where about I thought my waist would be on both sides.

I laid the scarf flat on to the floor and cut long slits upwards from the pin leaving enough room for my arm.

I sewed the edges together.

I hand sewed the neckline.

I have also been making my bag! (Still)

I just have to crochet the handles now…….2013-03-12 17.29.41

I have made a Downton Abbey style cloche hat:

I made a clip to accompany the jacket in the previous post because I didn’t like the one I made (and then I didn’t even wear it):

And finally, I am crocheting the baby blanket that I started last week as a commission for someone. It is going to include all of the colours of the rainbow.
